Tips for Students in Dorms

I just don't get people sometimes.

"Your music is far too loud."
"Is it?"

What do you mean, "Is it?" In all honesty, if you have to turn your music down so that you can talk to someone at the door, then your music is far too loud.

Right now, all the dorms at the University of Maryland are on 24 Hour Quiet Hours. And we RAs are required to write-up any and all noise violations. First off, if the residents haven't found out that 24 hour quiet hours are in affect, then their RA needs to get on the ball.

I was doing rounds tonight, and there was a room with music so loud that I could hear it at the end of the floor, on another floor. That is not right while people are getting ready for finals. So when I went to knock on the guy's door, I had to knock twice because he couldn't hear the first time. So in light of the occurrence, I've compiled a list of things for residents to not do:

- Do not have your music loud on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night - The RA automatically thinks there is a party.

- Do not question the RA if your music is too loud - It makes him want to write you up for not being cooperative.

- Do not open the door so that the RA can only see your head - This automatically tips him off that there is alcohol and/or drugs in the room.

- Do not pretend that you don't know the Residence Hall rules - The RA will want to write you up for being an idiot.

- Do not turn your bass boost on full blast - This upsets me more than anything during finals.

- Do not have parties in your room - This should be a given in the first place. When you have a party, you automatically put the RA in a compromising situation. If he is a good RA, he will do his job and write you up.

For those of you who do not heed that last piece of advice, if you do any of the other things mentioned above, you only be the worse off.
