In tonight's CBS special on Pope John Paul the Great, which I have to say was much better than ABC's version last Thursday, JP the Great comments on the evils of communism at the outset of the movie. JP the Great's views, presented by ABC, on communism were a bit fruity. Tonight however, JP the Great came out and continually spoke about how communism was evil, and wonderfully enough so too did the other clerics in the movie.
I thought that it was interesting that JP the Great mentioned that communism was a religion that replaced God with the state. Last week in my Revolutionary Russian history class, a communist was trying to argue that communism was not a religion, a contradiction to what three of us had just stated. I responded by saying that the communist view of a utopian society provided the metaphysics of a belief system that, in his opinion, was required to have something be religion. After tonights movie, I think that it'll be interesting to see if I bring it up again this week. Who knows?! But, what I can say is "Down with communism! Viva Christo Rey!"
