So I am currently in the process of reading When the Well Runs Dry by Fr. Thomas Green, S.J., and he talks about marriage as random times to help the reader understand his point. Well, here is one of the best passages I've found so far:
"In the marriage ceremony, they (the couple) give themselves to each other 'for better or worse.'...Each time I ask them (the couple) to repeat that phrase after me, I wonder if they truly realize what they are promising. I doubt that they do. When we are young and romantic, we say 'for better or worse' and we are sincere, but what we mean is, I hope and believe it will all be 'better,' but if the 'worse' comes I will try to survive with God's grace. It nevers enters our minds that the 'worse' is just as necessary to the growth of love as is the 'better.' Yet, that is true. The hard times are not obstacles to the growth of love, although they will certainly seem to be such when we are young. Rather, they are a necessary part of the experience by which real love comes to be." (pgs. 108-109 of 1981 edition).
For better or worse till death do us part. Ah, the power of cheese...I mean true love.
